Der Wunsch, Flüsse optimal zu nutzen, sie als Motoren für Wachstum und Wohlstand zu nutzen, ist Jahrtausende alt. Begradigt, vergiftet, ausgetrocknet: Der Mensch hat die Flüsse und die damit verbundenen Ökosysteme ruiniert. Wie konnte es dazu kommen? Und sind unsere Lebensadern noch zu retten? Wissenschaftler des Berliner Leibniz-Instituts für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei versuchen mithilfe der Entnahme von Gewässerproben und anhand physikalischer sowie biochemischer Analysen eine Ursache für das plötzliche Massensterben von zehntausenden Organismen in der Oder zu finden.

Against the Tide

The desire to make the best use of rivers, to use them as engines of growth and prosperity, is thousands of years old. Straightened, poisoned, dried up: Human have ruined the rivers and the ecosystems connected with them. How could it come to this? And can our lifelines still be saved? Scientists from the Berlin Leibniz Institute for freshwater ecology are trying to find a cause for the sudden mass death of tens of thousands of organisms in the Oder by taking water samples and using physical and biochemical analyses.
